#MeToo Movement Research

Writer's picture: Hannah DrautHannah Draut

In October of 2018, Dr. Field-Springer and I were invited to share our research at the Organization for the Study of Communication, Language and Gender (OSCLG) annual conference in Lake Tahoe, Nevada.

Our paper is entitled, "#MeToo Movement: Exploring Silence, Shame, and Gaslighting when Speaking Out About Sexual Assault". In it, we discuss reoccurring patterns in tweets from those who have shared their #MeToo stories on Twitter. We are currently finding themes such as gaslighting, victim blaming (perceived and actual), and the bystander effect. Today, we are coding a sample of over 100,000 tweets to find commonalities between the tweets and our themes.
